Some Important Things to Know About ISCI

Posted Friday, June 1, 2012 2:22 PM

Important Things to Know About ISCIISCI or Inttracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a process that is sometimes used along with in vitro fertilization. In most cases of in vitro fertilization treatment, the eggs and sperm are combined together in a dish to cause the eggs to become fertilized. This method usually works great, however there are times when more aggressive techniques of fertilization are needed. This is where ISCI comes in. During ISCI the sperm is inserted directly into the egg to ensure that fertilization is accomplished and it is usually only used for cases of extreme infertility with the male.

Common Causes of Male Infertility

The most common cause of male infertility is Oligospermia. This is what occurs when a man’s ejaculate has a low sperm count. Low sperm count results in a lower chance of fertilization. This is usually the diagnosis that is given when there are less than 20 million sperm per ml. Another cause of infertility is called Teratozoospermia. This condition is when the sperm are abnormally shaped or formed and not able to move to the uterus. Finally there is Asthenozoospermia. This is when the sperm are unable swim vigerously and for long enough to get to the uterus. In all of these cases ISCI may be used.

ISCI Treatment Cost

The price for this type of treatment can vary from place to place. Some clinics will charge more than others, but the price is usually pretty close to other clinics in the area. Standard pricing is from 1,000 to 1,500 dollars. The important thing to remember is that it is not the price that matters. What is more important is that you choose a doctor that is experienced and that you are comfortable with to perform your ISCI fertilization.

Healthy Pregnancy

If you have an ISCI treatment done, you may wonder if there are any risks to the health of your child and the development of the pregnancy. There is always the risk of birth defects in any pregnancy and these risks are small, however there is a miniscule increase in this risk. Do not be alarmed because the amount is pretty insignificant. Be sure to keep in mind that infertility in males can be due to genetic reasons, so if the child is male, he may also experience this when he reaches adulthood. Aside from that ISCI is no different from being fertilized by a healthy sperm.

In Conclusion

Now that you know a little about ISCI, you can go into your fertility clinic confident. Be sure to talk in depth with your doctor about this treatment and ask if it is right for your situation. ISCI is not always the answer that is needed. Keep in mind that this type of fertilization is not always successful. The success rate is around 50-80 per cent; however the treatment may be repeated if necessary. ISCI is a good and healthy way to increase chances of pregnancy for couples who have trouble with other fertility methods.
